Krimsky (1992), in his discussion of the role of theory in social theories of risk, notes the loose application of the term theory outside formalised natural sciences, and suggests a spectrum of meaning ranging from formal axioms that are given an empirical interpretation at one end of the spectrum, through to a “single posited conjecture for explaining an event” (Krimsky, 1992: 6) at the other.
