In the year 1913 at a nearby site there was an apes jaw found with canine teeth worn down like humans. The fragments that were found were thought by many experts of the day to be fossilized remains of an unknown form of early humans. The majority of the scientific community thought that the Piltdown find might be the “missing link” between apes and humans.
