Sometime during the Cretaceous, at least 94 million years ago, South America separated from Gondwanaland and began a long period of isolation (fig. 1). For a little over a 90 million years, South America was effectively an inland continent. The only way for fauna to reach the continent was through island hopping or rafting. This allowed the fauna to develop independently from any other continent, creating a unique South American fauna.
