It is said by many that Socrates and his teachings are responsible for the Thirty Tyrants, as several of his students make up this group, including Critias who was their mercilous leader. Socrates begins his defense by asking that we do not bring any prior rumors or hearsay into this decision but to hear he and his accusers out today, which I can undoubtedly do. He first addresses the charge of corrupting the youth by telling of his friend Chaerephon who ventured to ask the Oracle if there was anyone wiser than Socrates, to which the Oracle answered no. Socrates than set out on a quest to prove the Oracle wrong by finding men with more intelligence, but wound up finding only ignorance in these men...
