When she produced her first sculptural work, her imagery had been influenced by European Surrealist artists who immigrated to the United States after World War II. Bourgeois's early sculptures were composed of groupings of abstract and organic shapes, often carved from wood. By the 1960s her work displayed a wide range of both materials and appearance. Some of the materials she uses are glass, wood, steel, marble, and rubber latex sometimes combining them in one piece. Bourgeois's style relies strongly on a personal vocabulary of anthropomorphic forms charged with sexual allusions.
