McMurphy was a convicted rapist and had 5 counts for assault before he “plays mad” and ends up in the mental institution because he thinks it is easier to serve his time in a mental asylum than jail. He soon realizes that a mental asylum isn’t all that great, because some of the “privileges” he used to get in prison, like being able to watch the World Series on Television, was prohibited by the Head Nurse of the institution named Mildred Ratched (Louise Fletcher), who was a “sexually repressed and domineering” person whose life revolved around work. Many people had a suspicion about McMurphy being a Mental patient, and the people who thought he was not crazy believed he was using this mental institution as a way of getting out of jail...
