Josquin combined the elegance, clarity, and musicality of Busnois, and that includes a sensitivity to how the words matched up with the music, and the advanced imitative techniques of Ockegham. There were two methods that Josquin employed. In Mass movements, he would segment by phrase the c.f. and use each segment as an imitative subject. In the motet and F-F chanson, he invented a subject and then applied English paraphrase to derive all subsequent imitative subjects. The effect is similar to Dufay's use of the paraphrased tenor motive, and that is that all sections are audibly related one to another...
