The whole commerce between master and slave is a perpetual exercise of the most boisterous passions, the most unremitting despotism on the one part, and degrading submissions on the other.” (Jefferson) Before his death Jefferson emancipated 5 of his most trusted slaves, and when he passed, his remaining slaves were sold to cover his debts.
