Workers use the radioactive elements to create controlled nuclear reactions. Most of the time scientists use a nuclear chain reaction called fission. Fission creates a massive amount of heat that is used to create boiling water. Scientists must be careful they don’t let the reactor become to hot or they will loose control of the reaction. If the reaction becomes unstable, an exponential release of heat and radiation, called a meltdown, will occur. Meltdowns are extremely hazardous and can cause many miles in radius of the reactor to be saturated in harmful doses of radiation. However, there have not been many of these disasters, but the odds of the specialists being able to react to a meltdown seem slim according to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC)...
