People began to call AIDS “gay cancer” and “GRIDS” which stood for Gay-Related Immune Deficiency Syndrome. Gay men began to be outcasts and looked down upon (HIV).
Because AIDS was first discovered in gay men, US organizations began to more openly promote safer sex between homosexual men. There were support groups for homosexual couples who had AIDS or who had a fear of getting it. Around the same time this was happening, protests began to break out. They supported safe sex and the rights of people with AIDS. People with AIDS were usually discriminated against in unusual ways. They were ignored, looked down upon, fired from jobs, and sometimes even their families did not want to accept the fact that they had this terrible disease...
