The name Guildhall may derive from an old British expression “gild”, which means payment, and was meant to be a place where citizens are paying taxes. For at least eight centuries Guildhall itself has been the administrative centre of the City. For centuries the hall was used for trials and many people were condemned to death there. The oldest buildings of Guildhall are dated to 1411,
whereas the Great Fire of London destroyed the rest of the buildings in 1666. Due to the damage, the buildings were partially restored in 1670 and the present big entrance was built in 1788...
