At present, there is a twenty year research project based around Flag Fen lead by Frances Pryor, the archaeologist who initially discovered the site. Due to the anaerobic conditions of the peat bog surrounding this site, timber and other organic matter were preserved.
Although only a small portion of the site was excavated, more than 300 items, including jewellery, weapons and various personal objects, were found. It is strongly believed by many archaeologists that these artefacts were placed as votive offerings. Many of them are broken, and it is thought that this was deliberate, to show that they had no intention of retrieving them...
