Force is persuasive power. One way Edwards used force was with charged language. It makes the reader feel how the writer wants them to feel. This style of persuasion is very effective because Edwards made his audience fearful of their sins. He shouted to the increasingly disturbed audience, “The fire is made ready, the furnace is now hot, ready to receive [the sinners]” (18). The sinners Edwards is talking about are the unconverted ones. He was saying that God will send anyone who is unconverted to hell at any given moment. This scared the congregation into wanting to convert. Edwards knew his audience wouldn’t want to spend eternity in hell so he persuaded them through force and fear that if they converted, they would be saved and would feel God’s grace...
