Stone castles were introduced to Ireland by the Anglo Normans from about 1220 and continued to be erected till the early 15th century when tower houses began to be built. It has been estimated that between 1169 and the 17th century around 3000 castles were built and between the late 1400's and 1600's around 7000 tower houses were built (O Keefe 2000, 34).
