In 1835 Hawthorne introduced “Young Goodman Brown”, a story that is filled to the brim with ‘hit-someone-over-the-head’ symbolism. The reader is introduced to Goodman Brown when he is leaving his wife Faith for a journey that is bound to change his perspective on his own religious faith. Throughout ‘Young Goodman Brown’; Hawthorne uses symbolism and allegory to further elaborate on the subject of ‘faith’.
One must first take a look at Hawthorne’s choice of Character names, in relation to allegory. ‘Young Goodman Brown’ can be picked apart to the extreme. The adjective ‘young’ describes that Brown is naive, inexperienced, in need of guidance, or even perhaps an intervention (which he certainly gets!)...
