From this we can see that John is violent and that he does not care about other’s feelings. Furthermore, he strucks the narrator without realising that the narrator could have lost his life due to the cut on his head. Also, he does not know that by hurting the narrator, he is actually making the narrator feel weak and hopeless. Being ‘four years older than’ the narrator, John should be taking care of the younger ones rather than hurting them. Therefore, from this we can see that John is a violent person.
John is also presented as someone who is selfish and who does not help others. When the narrator was reading a book which belongs to the Reed family, John said that the narrator has ‘no business to take our (his) books’ and that ‘all the house belongs to me (him), or will do in a few years’...
