From 1839- 1849 she was a teacher. By 1849, she was involved in abolition and temperance societies (Gehard). During this time she came to the realization that women didn’t get full equality in these societies or in everyday life. This motivated her to campaign for women’s rights (Gehard). She didn’t know it then, but she was embarking on what would become her life’s work. She traveled the country speaking on behalf of women’s rights.
