Essay text:
Woolf states “nothing…had any chance against death.” All men and women, all cats and newts and poets must face it, and the ability of this tiny creature to muster up in its final moments the hubris and the courage to right itself, to maintain what flimsy facade of dignity a moth may have, is the only hope Woolf sees for anyone in death. We cannot fight it, she is telling us, but we don’t have to passively take it. In my mind I hear her quoting Dylan Thomas on her death-bed, her voice as dry and dusty as a moth’s wing, quietly whispering “Rage, rage, against the dying of the light.”
