In this time, Senator Joseph McCarthy sent the American public into frenzy with a communist witch-hunt in February 1950 with the claim that he had a list of “known communists”. Subsequently, many innocent people were blacklisted, or imprisoned on the grounds of being “communist”. It was Millers intention to enlighten the public and diffuse the hysteria McCarthy used to fuel the regime.
The Crucible is a parable to this situation. Miller expresses his own position in the 1950’s in the story through Proctor. John Proctor tries to hold his thinking and values and does not allow himself to get caught up in the hysteria of the witch trials...
