“Hap” by Thomas Hardy, “The World is Too Much with Us” by Wordsworth, and “The Second Coming” by Yeats are all examples of poems across the ages with different ways of calling upon or addressing God. Although many poems that we have read have contained religious themes and Gerard Manley Hopkins’ “God’s Grandeur” highlights the magnificence of God, most poems throughout the eras only address God in times of need.
“Hap” by Thomas Hardy is an example of a poem that calls upon God because of an overwhelming feeling of hopelessness. In the beginning of the poem he describes his suffering by calling upon a theoretical “vengeful god” (1) “If but some vengeful god would call to me/From up the sky, and laugh: "Thou suffering thing,/Know that thy sorrow is my ecstasy,/That thy love's loss is my hate's profiting!"” (1-4) This poem speaks to the fact that people called upon God when they are tormented or in miserable: “…joy lies slain,/And why unblooms the best hope ever sown?” (5-6) “Hap” and “God’s Grandeur” don’t have many similarities apart from the religious theme and the contrast between the messages...
