In the first stanza, Nicholson describes a boy who has been alive ‘fifty-six months or perhaps a week more’ and the boy states that he is ‘not four/But rising five.’ From this we gather the boy’s eagerness to grow up as fast as he can. The phrase, ‘his toffee buckled cheeks’ creates an image of how the boy is trying to consume it as quickly as he can, metaphoric of his wish to be considered an adult as soon as possible. The poem soon moves on from the description of this child to more abstract concepts…if constantly we are looking forward, what happens when there is no more forward to look to? ‘Not living/But rising dead...
