The focus thereby shifts from who has been doing something (the active subject) to what something has been done to (the active object). To set up such a construction, both languages use a tense form of a modal verb (to be in English, werden in German) and the past participle. The active subject can, but does not have to be, included in the passive sentence. This is done via the by-agent in English that is put at the end of the passive sentence, in German via a von-construction (sometimes also with durch) that is placed between the modal and the past participle. As verb splitting is possible in German but not in English, this placement difference shall not be further discussed here as it belongs to another topic...
