In Elie Wiesel’s Night, we meet Elie, a devoted and faithful Jewish boy who gets swept into an upheaval of hate and unimaginable brutality from which death seems like paradise. Through the few years that we follow him in his journey of “life in death,” he changes from a loving child and devout Jew to a godless, callous broken vessel.
At the beginning of the novel, Elie is an observant Jew. He tells us that “By day I studied Talmud and by night I would run to the synagogue” (3). The fact that Elie “runs” to the synagogue daily shows his enthusiasm and passion for Judaism. In addition, he begs permission to study the Kabbalah despite his father’s objections...
