The ominous and dark atmosphere prepares the audience for the destruction and gloom that follows. Edmond appears in the middle of the set as a dark figure drawing the audience's attention towards him. He then begins to speak of his mistreatment because he is an illegitimate child. He reveals his plot to take Edgar's land: "Well then legitimate Edgar, I must have your land" so that "Edmond the base shall top the legitimate". There is a close-up on Edmond's face as he describes his intentions and this in turn prepares the audience for the disclosure of his sinister design. He continually seems to be looking out into the distance and looking around as if trying to think out his next moves showing that he is about to put his plan into action...
