The foods that the men eat give a feel of richer/high class food such as different types of wine, partridges, and salads. On the other hand the women were stuck with prunes, custard, and bargain priced foods which are characteristic of the middle lower class.
The men’s college is full of imagery such as “spots on the flanks of a doe,” and “flushed yellow and flushed crimson.” The water and wine are juxtaposed in the two passages to better emphasize the different conditions between them along with the complexity of the meal.
