Brutus didn't want Caesar to take the thrown and then turn his back on the people. After they killed Caesar, Brutus said, "Our hearts you see not; they are pitiful; and pity to the general wrong of Rome?"(act III). Again, this shows how Brutus loved Caesar but loved Rome more. I think it's the only reason Brutus turned against Caesar.
If Brutus wasn't in Julius Caesar, the conspiracy probably wouldn't of worked. If he hadn't loved Rome more than Caesar then he wouldn't of helped kill Caesar. The conspirators wouldn't of been able to do it by themselves because they didn't have Brutus as an excuse...
