Kozol wants everyone to realize that regardless of race or affluence students will always have a universal motivation for success. However with funding like this Kozol’s idea of an equal education system becomes more of a dream than a reality.
Another example of pathos, or use of emotion to convey a point is when Kozol asks a young boy how he gets to school. The young boy replies “by train with my father” Kozol asks how long does it take “an hour and a half each way”. This adds up to be three hours a day on a train, while the suburban kid only has a mere 20min ride. I think Kozol put this into the article because its something we can all relate to, everyone commutes somewhere everyday and the fact that this poor kid has to commute this far to go to a lesser school is mind boggling and sad and truly plays on the psyche of the reader...
