He resist death and longs for immortality after seeing his beloved Enkidu suffer and perish. Enkidus death only further provoked the godly side of Gilgamesh, and the afterlife was suddenly terrifying to him. I really loved Enkidu’s character, although I do wish the story could of added more personal parts to it about him. He was the other half of Gilgamesh, he the wild instincts, And Gilgamesh the more intellectual. Body and soul. The body dies and the soul remains to wonder the earth. One thing that I would question deeply about this story though, was the civilizing of Enkidu. Perhaps love was his first lesson as man, but the fact that it defines sex as the factor that separates us from animals? I do not believe so, but that is another matter or another time...
