Another reason why Romeo’s may be irritable is because his first love Rosaline has decided to become a nun, so she has promised not to have anything to do with men. So this means that Romeo is in love with a girl that does not love him which is called unrequited love. An example of an oxymoron that is used in this scene is ‘O Loving Hate’ which suggests that Romeo is confused about love; he does not know whether to be sad or happy about being in love.
Romeo also uses other oxymorons such as feather of lead, bright smoke and sick health. An oxymoron is where two opposites are compared. Benvolio then says to Romeo, ‘ By giving liberty into thine eyes; examine other beauties’ Romeo reacts disheartened to this advice by replying ‘ Where I may read who pass’d that passing fair? Farewell thou canst not teach me to forget’ this suggests that even though Romeo can’t love Rosaline he will not forget her when he finds another lady to love...
