Owen was well educated and was well on his way to becoming a great poet well before the war. However when the war started in 1915, he felt it to be his duty to serve for his country and therefore enlisted. Owen was killed in 1918 one week before the war ended. "Dulce Et Decorum Est" was one of only five poems published before his death(Poupard 212). This is probably due to the fact that he was for the most part isolated from the world around him.
"Dulce Et Decorum Est" is broken into four different stanzas each with its own purpose in the poem. The first stanza is about soldiers continuing through a path in a miserable condition...
