The casting scene introduces the Athenian workmen at Peter Quince’s house, where Peter is presenting to the other workmen a script which they could perform at the wedding of the Great Duke Theseus. Probably the first piece of humour comes as Bottom makes an arse of himself pretending to know this play and calling it a merry piece of work, but in truth it is a tragedy of two lovers who end up killing themselves. After this he tries to show off some of his ‘acting skills’ by reciting some dreadful verse, with horrible alliterations, dreadfully overacting all the way through the badly written piece...
