Juliet’s beauty is made to seem even brighter by contrasting it to the darkness of the Ethiop’s ear and the blackness of the crows.
Romeo again uses light imagery to describe Juliet’s beauty when he sneaks off to her balcony after their first meeting. He says to himself “Arise fair sun, and kill the envious moon, / Who is already sick and pale with grief” (2.2.4-6). In this passage Juliet is compared to the sun, and described as being “fair”, while the moon, the opposite of the sun, is described as “envious”.
