He won, for he finally killed the fish. Just as he said: "Every day is a new day. It is better to be lucky. But I would rather be exact. Then when luck comes you are ready." The old man had been ready very well. He had caught the chance.
However, "Every day is a new day", a pack of sharks broke all his hope...
