In the story The Necklace, the main character Mathilde made the decision to not come out and tell the truth to her friends. Mathilde lied about who she was as a person and as a family. Mathilde made people perceive her as a high class women and she lied to all the people that she borrowed money from to pay off the necklace, and in the end it wasn't worth it. In my personal experience I have gone through the same thing.
Towards the beginning of the story, Mathilde is always asking for more. Monsieur Loisel, Mathildes husband, offers Mathilde so many things but she would be to ashamed of what he was offering...
