Polonius disapproves of their relationship and thinks that Hamlet is infatuated with Ophelia. Hamlets speech plays a huge part in his madness. He says "To be or not to be, that is the question ? Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, or to take arms against a sea of troubles, and by opposing, end them. To die, to sleep ? No more; and by a sleep to say we end the heart-ache and the thousand natural shocks."
Hamlets speech gives out the impression that he thinks suicide is the answer. In this speech he contemplates weather to kill himself or not then realizes he is uncertain about what lies after death (afterlife) and concludes that at least if he's alive he will just have to deal with life here on earth while if he kills himself he doesn't know what to expect...
