The author uses this religion to describe what Xeones, the main character, is going through. He has the Xeones experience interaction with the god Apollo. This impacts the story because Apollo shows the Xeones that he can still fight in battle with the limited use of his hands. He also has Xeones resurrected by Apollo after the battle to tell his story to the Persian scribe.
