While slavery was a somewhat accepted custom in America during the early nineteenth century it was the most inhumane quality of the society. Frederick Douglass chronicled his life as a slave, giving the reader truths about what it was like to be a slave.
As a whole, the book can be both depressing and heartfelt. Knowing that ancestors of out nation had the ability to disregard the fact that these slaves were human beings and not property is disgraceful. In modern day, if anyone were to perform such acts of cruelty he would be severely punished. Douglass’s life was intriguing and often had me wondering how these people could live a life bounded by the chains of slavery; families being torn apart, the constant buying and selling to new masters, the whipping and torture...
