In 1939 Hattie received an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Gone with the Wind. Hattie received the loudest applause as she won the Oscar. She was the first African American to receive an Academy Award.
In 1947 Hattie became the star of a radio show called The Beulah Show. This show left the radio and be came a television show. During this time she married Larry Williams who was an interior designer. They got divorced a year later.
Hattie stayed on the Beulah Show until she died on October 2, 1952 from cancer...
