In “How It Feels to be Colored Me” Hurston talks about what it was like living in a mixed community after coming from an all black community. Hurston experiences racism but doesn’t feel the need to change herself. She is not ashamed to be colored and uses her color to better things in life. Hurston says “But I am not tragically colored,” she makes the point to say that she know she is colored and not ashamed of being that way. She is just tired of white people telling her that her is colored and was the granddaughter of former slaves (6). Hurston feels the same way as everyone else and sees not color difference
