And Carteret's position as editor of the Morning Chronicle, along with his reliance on his wife's patrimony, suggests how far the "dignity" of the family - and the Southern aristocracy as a whole has fallen. At the end of this chapter, Carteret writes "the famous editorial in which he sounded the tocsin of a new crusade" for white supremacy; thus, through Chesnutt's construction of the novel, Carteret's "hope" for Dodie - and for the tradition Dodie embodies - introduces and figures this "crusade" (39)...
