He was a Catholic while the colonies were Protestant which altered conflicts between the two religions because James is leaning more towards Christian’s side as he passes laws against Protestants to keep Christianity safe. For an example, when James issued the Declarations of Indulgence that granted freedom of worship to Catholics, but it gave problems to the rest of the colonies. Colonist thought Catholicism brought absolutism to the government role. Nevertheless, about over a half of the government in the colonies were under the direct control of the monarch. Not too long later, all that would begin to change towards a constitutional government which gives more democratic freedom for colonists...
