Setting the number of stripes in North Carolina one overseer killed 5 slaves in two or three yrs before 1712. When one slave fell asleep and lost one parcel of rice in the river the overseer chained him, whipped him twice a day, refused to give him food, and confined him at night in a machine that was shaped like a coffin, where he could not turn.
