In 1775 slavery was the main force of labor in the American South, and was still accepted in the north. In the Southern colonies slavery was a way of life to produce the agriculture to aristocrats and plantation owners needed to make them richer. Most of the Northern slaves unlike the southern slaves; they worked along side the whites in stores, in ship ports, or on farms. There were more than 20,000 slaves in New York in the 1770s and around the New England area there was over 16,000 African American slaves.
Black Americans were not allowed to serve in the army because the slave owners did not trust their slaves with weapons, afraid that they would revolt against them...
