Upset and outraged, Bacon pledges to build a people’s militia to fight back against the tribe. Foregoing the permission of the Virginia governor, Bacon proceeds to collect a small army of 500 men to attack the Native Americans.
Bacon and his men lash out against the Occaneechee, a much more peaceful tribe when compared the Susquehannock, the original aggressors. Despite this, Bacon and his men become local heroes following the attack. With the support of his fellow citizens, Bacon writes a document called the Declaration of the People. In this, he criticizes the administration of Governor Berkeley of Virginia on several issues, including unfair taxes, favoritism in the seats of power of the Virginia government, and lack of protection of western farmers against Native American tribes...
