The New England colonies where mostly populated by families which means it was easier for the people to mate and raise other families. Also with families it was easier to maintain the plantations, while in the Chesapeake region because most of the people were single men and women where scarce it was hard to make a family which made it hard to keep ones plantation up and running. Around the Chesapeake region there were many Indians which also made it hard for settlers to start a life when it was ended fast by Indian raids, also the Chesapeake region had to defend themselves from the Dutch attacks and many men had to leave their families and homes to go defend the borders from the attackers...
